Good News for those who have taken Covaxin

Shortly after the World Health Organisation (WHO) gave approval for emergency use listing (EUL) for Covaxin, Switzerland has recognized Covaxin. Also, the UK is soon likely to give approval to Covaxin.

According to the Times of India, Switzerland accepts Covaxin & UK could do so shortly. This is certainly going to see an increase in international travel, said a senior aviation ministry.[1]

Prior to the WHO’s approval of Covaxin, 16 countries had accepted this vaccine for the purpose of allowing vaccinated travellers from India.

Now after the WHO’s acceptance of India’s indigenous Covaxin many countries including the UK and Canada are evaluating the vaccine and could recognize it in the coming days. The UK is one of the biggest destinations for Indians and is expected to recognize Covaxin soon.

As per the officials, the ministry is adding capacity depending on demand for flights under air bubble agreements with various countries. Increased capacity can lead to a lower fare, say airlines.

The International airfares have seen a very high surge during COVID-19. The one-way ticket fare to some destinations was priced higher than the pre-pandemic return fares.

From Monday, the US is opening up for international travellers. An official said, “India has an open sky agreement with the US (meaning no restriction on the number of flights Air India and US carriers can operate between the two places).”

Foreign tourists will be allowed in from mid-November on non-charters and high fares will be an impediment in restarting inbound travel to India.

A British High Commission spokesperson told TOI: “The UK will continue taking a phased approach to extending our vaccinated arrivals policy. Work is ongoing, including with international partners, to determine which other non-UK vaccines we might recognize in the future.”[1]
