South Korea plane crash: 85 of 181 onboard dead

At least 85 people have died after a passenger jet crashed during landing at Muan International Airport in South Korea on Sunday morning, according to authorities. The crash involved Jeju Air Flight 7C2216, a Boeing 737, carrying 175 passengers and six crew members.

Crash details

The flight, which had departed from Bangkok, was attempting to land around 9 a.m. local time when it skidded off the runway and collided with a wall, leading to a devastating explosion. Initial video footage suggests the landing gear was not deployed, and the plane appeared to be traveling at high speed upon touchdown, indicating a possible malfunction.

The National Fire Agency confirmed the updated death toll, which has steadily risen since the crash. Officials are still working to account for all passengers, but it remains unclear how many people are unaccounted for.

Rescue efforts and investigations

Conflicting reports emerged about the number of survivors. The fire agency and local fire department stated that two individuals were rescued from the wreckage, while an earlier statement from the transport ministry reported that one crew member had been pulled to safety. The conditions of the survivors have not been disclosed.

Rescue teams and firefighters were seen battling flames and thick smoke at the crash site, as videos from the scene captured the devastation. The South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport is on-site to investigate the cause of the crash.
