Fragile US-Iran ceasefire shaken by Hormuz confrontation
Tensions between the United States and Iran escalated once again after both countries accused each other of initiating military action near the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, threatening the stability of a fragile month-long ceasefire.
Donald Trump claimed American naval forces successfully repelled Iranian attackers targeting US destroyers transiting through the Strait of Hormuz and warned Tehran of a far harsher response if it refused to strike a deal with Washington.
“Three world-class American destroyers just transited, very successfully, out of the Strait of Hormuz, under fire,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“There was no damage done to the three destroyers, but great damage done to the Iranian attackers,” he added, claiming the attackers and several small boats had been “completely destroyed”.
Iran, however, accused the United States of carrying out aggression against Iranian vessels and civilian coastal areas near the Gulf.
According to Iranian state media, a spokesperson for Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters alleged that US forces targeted an Iranian oil tanker travelling near Jask and another vessel approaching the Emirati port of Fujairah.
The statement also accused the US of conducting airstrikes on civilian areas around Bandar Khamir, Sirik and Qeshm Island with the cooperation of unnamed regional countries.
Amid the escalating rhetoric, Esmaeil Baqaei issued a veiled warning to Washington, comparing Iran to an angry lion.
“If you see the lion’s fangs protruding, do not imagine that the lion is smiling,” Baqaei wrote on X.
During a press briefing, he also insisted that Iran itself was a “superpower” when asked why Tehran was not backing down in the face of US pressure.
Baqaei further urged Gulf nations to reduce dependence on American military protection, arguing that the US presence in the region had become a liability rather than a source of security.
Despite the latest military exchange, Trump insisted the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran remained intact.
Speaking to ABC News, the US president dismissed the confrontation as “just a love tap”.
“It’s just a love tap… the ceasefire is going. It’s in effect,” Trump said.
However, he also renewed threats of stronger military action if Iran failed to quickly finalise a nuclear agreement with the United States.
“They’ll never have that opportunity, and, just like we knocked them out again today, we’ll knock them out a lot harder, and a lot more violently, in the future, if they don’t get their Deal signed, FAST,” Trump warned.
The president reiterated that Washington would never allow Tehran to obtain nuclear weapons and claimed negotiations were progressing positively, though he stressed Iran needed to agree to terms soon.
The latest confrontation has once again raised fears of wider instability across the Gulf region, with the Strait of Hormuz remaining one of the world’s most critical energy shipping routes.
