Lloyd Austin warns Iran of ‘serious consequences’ if it conducts direct military attack on Israel

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has reaffirmed America’s unwavering support for Israel‘s right to defend itself against Hezbollah following recent escalations. In a phone call with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Austin stressed the importance of achieving a diplomatic resolution to protect civilians on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border.

Austin stated on X, “I made it clear that the United States supports Israel’s right to defend itself,” highlighting the mutual agreement on dismantling attack infrastructure to prevent attacks similar to those on October 7. He emphasized that diplomatic efforts are crucial for ensuring the safe return of civilians to their homes.

In a pointed warning to Iran, Austin declared that the US is prepared to respond to any threats from Iran and Iran-backed terrorist organizations. He reiterated the “serious consequences” Iran would face if it launched a direct military attack against Israel, reinforcing the US’s commitment to Israel’s security amid rising tensions.

Earlier, US State Department Spokesman Matthew Miller confirmed that Israel had informed the US about its “limited operations focused on Hezbollah infrastructure near the border.” Reports suggest that Israel is planning a limited ground campaign in Lebanon.

US President Joe Biden also indicated plans to speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amid escalating tensions following Israel’s recent airstrikes, which reportedly killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and others.

Since September 23, Israel has intensified its airstrikes across Lebanon, leading to heightened clashes with Hezbollah that began on October 8, 2023, when Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel in solidarity with Hamas in Gaza. The situation remains tense as the US works with international partners to prevent an all-out war in the region.
