‘Langda’ mangoes to fly to Sharjah from Varanasi on Monday

The geographical indication tagged Varanasi’s famous Langda mango will fly directly from a newly constructed pack house in Varanasi to Sharjah.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will flag off 4-5 tons of Banarasi Langda mangoes, along with other perishable items from Varanasi airport to Sharjah.

The Integrated Pack House for Food and Vegetable Export has been built about 10 km from the airport. It offers single-window clearance for exports and is equipped to handle exports by sea, land, and air.

Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) deputy general manager Dr. C B Singh said that the mangoes and other food items will be sent by flight to Sharjah.

Separately, a 40-ft reefer container containing 30 to 35 tons of green chilies will be transported through the sea from Mumbai to Dubai and Doha. Preparations are also being made to send additional products, such as okra, abroad.

Singh said the efforts were aimed at turning farmers into exporters and eliminating middlemen. This will also help in increasing the income of farmers.

“At the pack house, perishable food items will be prepared in accordance with global standards. The pack house is accredited by APEDA for export as per international standards. It is built in an area of about 4,461 square feet at a cost of Rs.15.78 crores. Farmers will also be trained here to prepare products according to the demands of the international market. This will be the third integrated packhouse in UP, after Saharanpur and Lucknow,” Singh said.

Explaining the process of packing, Singh said that fruits and vegetables must go through a number of processes in the integrated pack house to meet international standards.

“Because of this, their flavor, freshness, and other qualities remain unaltered. To ensure that these products are free of pests and diseases of any kind, special precautions are taken. The equipment engaged in the pack house are indigenous. Langda mangoes are exported only after undergoing vapor heat and hot water treatment,” he said.
