“Lotus blooms in Bengal”: Modi reacts to BJP’s landmark victory

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday described the outcome of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections as one that “will be remembered forever,” as the Bharatiya Janata Party surged towards a historic victory in the state.

Taking to X as trends became clear, Modi said that “people’s power” had prevailed, declaring, “The Lotus blooms in West Bengal.” He added that the mandate reflected support for the BJP’s governance model and development-focused politics.

“The 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections will be remembered forever. People’s power has prevailed and BJP’s politics of good governance has triumphed. I bow to each and every person of West Bengal,” he wrote.

Historic shift in Bengal politics

As of early evening trends, the BJP was leading in over 200 seats—up sharply from its tally in 2021—putting it on course to form its first-ever government in the state. The result marks a major political shift, ending the long-standing dominance of Mamata Banerjee’s All India Trinamool Congress, which had governed for three consecutive terms.

Calling the mandate “spectacular,” Modi said the BJP government would work to fulfil the aspirations of the people and ensure opportunity and dignity for all sections of society.

Tribute to party cadre

The Prime Minister also credited the party’s grassroots workers for the breakthrough.

“BJP’s record win in West Bengal would not be possible without the efforts and struggles of countless Karyakartas over generations. I salute them all,” he said, highlighting their persistence despite political challenges.

Assam delivers third straight term

In Assam, the BJP-led alliance was also headed for a decisive victory, marking its third consecutive term in the state. Trends showed the alliance leading in a majority of seats in the 126-member Assembly.

Thanking voters, Modi said the result reaffirmed public trust in the alliance’s development agenda.

“Assam blesses BJP-NDA once again! The win illustrates unwavering support for development and bringing a positive difference in people’s lives,” he said.

He also praised party workers in the state for their sustained outreach and organisational strength over the past decade.

Momentum for BJP nationally

The twin victories in West Bengal and Assam are being seen as a significant political boost for the BJP, expanding its footprint in eastern India while consolidating its position in the Northeast.
