Trump orders naval escorts in Hormuz, says Iran will face consequences if it intervenes
US President Donald Trump has announced a new naval initiative, “Project Freedom,” aimed at escorting stranded foreign vessels through the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, as tensions in West Asia remain high.
Set to begin Monday, the operation is being framed as a humanitarian mission to assist ships caught in the ongoing conflict. Trump said many vessels are “innocent bystanders,” facing severe shortages of food, drinking water, and essential supplies needed to sustain large crews.
Strong warning to Iran
While emphasizing the humanitarian nature of the mission, Trump delivered a blunt warning to Tehran, stating that any attempt to interfere would trigger a forceful US response.
He said Washington has already communicated with affected nations, assuring them that the US Navy will ensure safe passage for their ships so they can resume normal operations without fear.
The message was clear: obstruction of the operation would not be tolerated.
Diplomacy continues behind the scenes
Despite the hardline rhetoric, diplomatic engagement between the US and Iran is ongoing. Trump noted that American representatives are involved in “positive discussions,” suggesting a possible diplomatic opening.
US envoy Steve Witkoff has also confirmed continued communication between the two sides, with reports indicating that fresh proposals are being explored to bring the conflict to an end.
Global trade disrupted
The Strait of Hormuz—a vital artery for global energy supplies—has been effectively shut since late February following the outbreak of conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran.
The disruption has stranded multiple commercial vessels, raising alarm over maritime safety and triggering wider concerns about global supply chains.
Oil markets under pressure
The crisis has sent shockwaves through global energy markets. Oil prices surged sharply, with crude briefly touching $126 per barrel before easing slightly.
Rising fuel costs in the United States have added economic pressure domestically, increasing urgency for a resolution as policymakers balance military posture with diplomatic efforts.
