All-party meeting in Parliament on Bangladesh crisis; Kharge, Rahul Gandhi attend the meet
On Tuesday the Central government called an all-party meeting regarding the situation in Bangladesh. This comes a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country amid a violent uprising against her administration.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar briefed political leaders on the situation in Bangladesh. The meeting was also attended by all NDA allies and most opposition parties, including leaders of the opposition in both the Houses, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. However, the AAP claimed it was not invited to the meeting.
Besides EAM Jaishankar, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju participated in the meeting on behalf of the Central government.
Earlier, on Monday, PM Modi held a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting at his official residence, during which he was briefed about the entire crisis in the neighbouring nation.
National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval briefed the Prime Minister on his meeting with former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and informed him about the latest political situation in the neighbouring country.
Sheikh Hasina, accompanied by her sister, landed at the Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad hours after resigning as Bangladesh’s Prime Minister. Her stay in India was approved only temporarily. Sources said she was taken to a “safe house”, and is likely to travel to the United Kingdom (UK).
The neighbouring country has plunged into uncertainty after extraordinary street protest over job quota forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to quit and flee.
Hasina’s unceremonious exit and the turmoil on Dhaka streets have got India worried and concerned that the popular anger against her may also singe Delhi, seen as a trusted ally and supporter of the Awami League.
