‘Open Hormuz first’: Trump on Iran ceasefire request
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday claimed that Iran has approached the United States seeking a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict, but said Washington would only consider the request once the Strait of Hormuz is “open, free and clear”.
In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump said the demand was necessary to ensure the safe movement of global oil shipments through the strategic waterway.
“Iran’s new regime president, much less radicalised and far more intelligent than his predecessors, has just asked the United States of America for a ceasefire,” Trump wrote.
“We will consider when Hormuz Strait is open, free and clear. Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages,” he added.
However, Trump did not name the Iranian leader who he claimed had made the ceasefire request.
Strait of Hormuz at centre of tensions
The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow maritime corridor connecting the Persian Gulf with global shipping routes, carries roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply and is considered one of the most strategically important waterways in global trade.
Tensions around the strait have intensified after Iran moved to restrict shipping traffic following US and Israel strikes on Iranian targets.
The move has raised concerns about disruptions to global energy supplies and further escalation in the region as the conflict continues.
