DMK leader TKS Elangovan says TVK should secure clear majority before staking claim
The political uncertainty in Tamil Nadu deepened on Friday as the DMK launched a sharp attack on actor-politician Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) over the ongoing government formation drama in the state.
DMK leader TKS Elangovan criticised Vijay for approaching Governor without first securing a clear majority in the Assembly. The remarks came amid mounting suspense over who will eventually form the next government in Tamil Nadu after the fractured election verdict.
“First get support and then approach the Governor,” Elangovan said, questioning the TVK’s strategy after the party fell short of the crucial majority mark of 118 seats.
He argued that Vijay, as the leader of the single-largest party, could have initially approached the Governor independently and later proved his strength on the floor of the House. However, Elangovan said that once TVK presented itself as part of a coalition without having adequate numbers, the Governor was justified in demanding proof of majority support.
“When they had approached the Governor first with 107 seats, because Vijay had contested in two constituencies, the Governor would have called them. But when they took some other party with them and the number became 112, the Governor would definitely say that they don’t have a majority,” Elangovan said.
The DMK leader also reacted to the controversy surrounding the alleged support letter from TTV Dhinakaran-led AMMK. TVK had claimed that it secured AMMK’s backing for a coalition government, but Dhinakaran later accused Vijay’s party of forging the letter submitted to the Governor.
Responding to the allegations, Elangovan said the matter was now before the law.
“There is a case, there is a complaint filed. When their MLA is not supporting him, why should he give such a letter to the Governor? That’s wrong. But let them prove it in court,” he said.
The Tamil Nadu political scene has witnessed dramatic twists since the election results were declared. While Vijay’s TVK emerged as the single-largest party, it remains short of the numbers required to form a stable government.
The Congress and CPM have already extended support to TVK, but last-minute setbacks emerged after both the AMMK and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) distanced themselves from the coalition bid.
Attention has now shifted to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), whose support could become crucial in determining the next government. Sources indicated that VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan is expected to meet Vijay later in the day.
With negotiations continuing behind closed doors and political tempers rising, Tamil Nadu remains caught in an intense power struggle over who will ultimately secure the numbers to stake claim to government formation.
