Fresh exchange of attacks raises fears of renewed regional conflict as mediation efforts to end the US-Israel-Iran war face fresh setbacks
Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply after Iran launched multiple missile barrages towards Israel, marking the first direct attack since a fragile ceasefire came into effect earlier this year. In response, Israel carried out airstrikes targeting military sites in central and western Iran, raising fears of a renewed regional conflict.
According to reports, air raid sirens sounded across several parts of Israel, sending millions of residents rushing to shelters. The Israeli military said it successfully intercepted multiple missiles fired from Iran in at least three separate barrages. Explosions were reportedly heard in northern Israel during the attack.
The missile launches came amid growing tensions following Israel’s recent strike on Beirut‘s southern suburbs. Tehran had warned that further Israeli military action in Lebanon could trigger retaliation and potentially reignite broader hostilities across the region.
In retaliation, the Israeli Air Force launched strikes against what it described as military targets belonging to the Iranian regime. The Israeli military confirmed the operation in a brief statement, saying its aircraft had targeted sites in western and central Iran.
Iranian state media reported explosions in several locations, including Tehran, Isfahan, Karaj and Tabriz. The country’s main airport, Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran, temporarily suspended air operations and closed surrounding airspace following the strikes.
Iranian authorities have not provided detailed information regarding the targets hit or the extent of the damage. However, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed that Israel used air-launched ballistic missiles during the attack.
The latest exchange of fire has complicated ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and reviving negotiations between Tehran and Washington. Several countries, including Pakistan, have been attempting to facilitate dialogue between the two sides in recent weeks.
Meanwhile, Iran reiterated its warning that US military installations across the Gulf region could be considered legitimate targets if the conflict expands further. The statement has heightened concerns about the possibility of a wider regional confrontation involving multiple countries.
The escalation follows Israel’s recent military action in Lebanon, where a strike on a residential building reportedly killed two people and injured several others. The attack came despite efforts by international mediators to maintain stability and preserve a ceasefire arrangement between Israel and Lebanon.
With both Iran and Israel showing little sign of backing down, analysts warn that the latest developments could undermine regional diplomatic initiatives and increase the risk of a broader conflict across the Middle East.
