TMC leader Jahangir Khan remanded five days of police custody in connection with an extortion case, a day after his arrest near the India-Nepal border
A court in West Bengal on Tuesday remanded Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Jahangir Khan to five days of police custody in connection with an ongoing extortion investigation, police officials said.
Khan was produced before the court following his arrest, after which investigators sought custodial interrogation to further examine the allegations against him. After hearing submissions from both sides, the court granted five days of police custody.
The development comes a day after Khan was arrested near the India-Nepal border in north Bengal. His arrest followed a Calcutta High Court order on May 26 that vacated the interim protection previously granted to him.
According to police, seven FIRs had been registered against Khan at Falta Police Station in South 24 Parganas district.
A police officer confirmed that Khan was apprehended from the India-Nepal border region, though officials did not disclose further operational details surrounding the arrest.
Next steps in the investigation
Following the completion of the five-day custody period, Khan will be produced before the court again.
The court will then determine the next course of action based on the progress of the investigation and the submissions made by the investigating agency.
Office vandalised after arrest
Shortly after news of Khan’s arrest emerged, angry residents allegedly vandalised his office in Falta, located in South 24 Parganas district.
According to reports, windowpanes were broken and furniture inside the premises was damaged. Police are expected to investigate the vandalism incident separately.
Locals also reportedly discovered packets of relief materials inside the office, triggering further protests. Some residents alleged that supplies intended for public distribution had been withheld.
Election setback in Falta
Khan had contested the Falta Assembly seat during the recent West Bengal Assembly elections but announced his withdrawal from the contest before the repoll held on May 21.
The TMC had described his decision as a betrayal, while BJP leaders criticised him for withdrawing from the race.
The repoll ultimately resulted in a decisive BJP victory. BJP candidate Debangshu Panda won the constituency by a margin of 1,09,021 votes over CPI(M) candidate Sambhu Nath Kurmi.
Khan finished fourth in the contest, securing 7,783 votes.
