Assam has intensified action against illegal immigration, with hundreds repatriated under the Foreigners Act and the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed the state Assembly that 1,679 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants have been repatriated over the last two years, as the state government stepped up its crackdown on illegal immigration and strengthened border enforcement.
Replying to a discussion in the Assembly, the Chief Minister said 1,486 people were deported under the Foreigners Act, while 193 others were expelled under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950. He said the action was carried out after following the prescribed legal process.
Sarma also informed the House that 91,385 ‘D-voters’ (Doubtful Voters) currently remain on Assam’s electoral rolls. These individuals are marked for verification of their citizenship status and their cases are subject to adjudication by Foreigners Tribunals.
The Chief Minister clarified that no person declared a foreigner is repatriated while an appeal remains pending before the Gauhati High Court or the Supreme Court. Only after all legal remedies have been exhausted are deportation or repatriation procedures initiated, he said.
The state government has consistently maintained that curbing illegal immigration remains one of its key priorities, citing concerns over national security, demographic changes and border management. Assam has also intensified surveillance along the India-Bangladesh border while pursuing legal action against individuals identified as illegal immigrants.
The issue of illegal immigration has remained politically significant in Assam for decades and continues to feature prominently in the state’s governance and security agenda.
