India has formally launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028-29 term, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar unveiling the country’s diplomatic vision under the theme “SHANTI: Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust and Integrity.”

The campaign was launched during a special event at the United Nations headquarters in New York attended by UN envoys, diplomats and senior officials. India is seeking election to the UNSC for the 2028-29 term and will contest the sole Asia-Pacific Group seat against Tajikistan in elections scheduled for June 2027.

Addressing the gathering, Jaishankar said the world is witnessing growing conflicts, geopolitical uncertainty and evolving security challenges, making a stronger and more representative United Nations essential. He said India’s approach is rooted in the principles of norms, trust and integrity, while reaffirming the country’s commitment to peace, multilateralism and equitable global development.

Highlighting India’s credentials, the External Affairs Minister noted that the country has contributed nearly three lakh personnel to around 50 UN peacekeeping missions since the organisation’s inception and continues to be among the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping operations. He also underscored India’s consistent advocacy for dialogue, diplomacy and the interests of the Global South.

India last served as a non-permanent member of the Security Council during the 2021-22 term. New Delhi has long argued that the current 15-member Security Council no longer reflects contemporary geopolitical realities and has repeatedly called for expansion of both permanent and non-permanent membership categories.

The launch of the campaign comes amid ongoing global conflicts, including the war in Ukraine, the Gaza conflict and heightened tensions in West Asia. India has maintained that meaningful reform of the Security Council is essential to make the United Nations more representative, credible and effective in addressing emerging global challenges.

Jaishankar is also expected to hold meetings with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and other senior officials during his visit before travelling to Brussels for the India-EU Trade and Technology Council meeting.
