Extremely concerned with Indian students trapped in Sumy, MEA calls for a ceasefire

Expressing its deep concern over Indian students stuck in the Eastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) strongly asked both Russia and Ukraine through multiple channels for an immediate ceasefire for their safe exit from the conflict zone.

Sumy is one of the conflict zones witnessing intense fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces.

MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted, “We are deeply concerned about Indian students in Sumy, Ukraine. Have strongly pressed Russian and Ukrainian governments through multiple channels for an immediate ceasefire to create a safe corridor for our students.”

The Indian students have been advised by the MEA to take safety precautions, stay inside shelters and avoid unnecessary risks.

Bagchi said the MEA and Indian Embassies are in regular touch with the students.

At a media briefing, Bagchi had also urged both the Ukrainian and Russian sides to put in place a “local ceasefire” for the evacuation of Indians from the conflict zones, including Kharkiv and Sumy.

He had said India is primarily focussing on evacuating its nationals out of the conflict zones in eastern Ukraine, including Kharkiv and Sumy, adding that the number of Indians stuck in Ukraine could be roughly in the range of 2,000 to 3,000.

The Indian Embassy in Ukraine on Saturday informed through a tweet which said, “Exploring all possible mechanisms to evacuate Indian citizens in Sumy, safely & securely. Discussed evacuation & identification of exit routes with all interlocuters including Red Cross. Control room will continue to be active until all our citizens are evacuated. Be Safe Be Strong”

Meanwhile, Russia declared a brief ceasefire in parts of Ukraine on Saturday. “Today, on March 5 at 10 am Moscow time, the Russian side declares a ceasefire and opens humanitarian corridors for the exit of civilians from Mariupol and Volnovakha,” Russian state-owned news agency Sputnik quoted the Russian defence ministry as saying.
