2nd Hindu priest arrested in Bangladesh without official warrant
Days after the arrest of Spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das, another Hindu priest was arrested in Bangladesh‘s Chattogram, sources said on Saturday. The arrested priest was identified as Shyam Das Prabhu, who reportedly went to meet Chinmoy Krishna Das in jail.
He was arrested without any official warrant, the sources said, adding that the practice allows authorities to detain someone and release them later.
Radharamn Das, Vice-President and spokesperson for ISKCON Kolkata, confirmed the arrest, posting on social media: “Another Brahmachari, Sri Shyam Das Prabhu, was arrested by Chattogram Police today.”
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has called for an immediate cessation of attacks and atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh, condemning the ongoing violence, looting, arson, and killings perpetrated by Islamic extremists.
In a strongly worded statement, the RSS expressed deep concern over the rising oppression faced by Hindus and other minority communities in the country, describing the situation as “deeply alarming.”
The RSS criticized the Bangladesh government for its failure to take action against these escalating attacks, with many blaming the silence of government agencies for allowing the violence to continue unchecked.
The statement also expressed concern over the repression of peaceful protests by the Hindu community, which has organized demonstrations to protect their rights in the face of increasing violence.
In particular, the RSS condemned the unjust imprisonment of ISKCON monk Chinmoy Krishna Das, who has been leading peaceful protests on behalf of the Hindu community in Bangladesh. The arrest of a religious leader who is advocating for the rights of Hindus is seen as a violation of justice.
In addition to calling for the immediate release of Chinmoy Krishna Das, the RSS urged the Bangladesh government to take swift and decisive action to protect Hindus and other minorities from further harm. The organization also appealed to the Indian government to continue advocating for the rights of minorities in Bangladesh on the international stage and to build global support to end these atrocities.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has voiced similar concerns, urging the Bangladesh government to take concrete steps to protect minorities. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reaffirmed India’s commitment to addressing the persecution of Hindus and other minorities, noting that India has consistently raised these issues with Bangladesh.
“We are concerned about the surge of extremist rhetoric and increasing incidents of violence,” said Jaiswal during a media briefing. He further urged the Bangladesh government to uphold its responsibility to safeguard all its citizens, including religious minorities.
The RSS’s call to action comes as tensions rise in Bangladesh, with India and international communities growing increasingly alarmed by the escalation of violence.
