ED conducts raids in Kolkata over financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College; TMC MLA under investigation
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched a series of raids and search operations across Kolkata and the Hooghly district in connection with a financial irregularities case involving the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Among the locations targeted are the residence and farmhouse of Dr. Sudipto Roy, a four-time Trinamool Congress MLA, and a prominent medical professional.
Roy, who represents the Serampore Assembly constituency in Hooghly, is also the chairman of the patients’ welfare committee at RG Kar Medical College and a member of the West Bengal Medical Recruitment Board. Additionally, he is a former president of the West Bengal Medical Council.
ED officials are conducting simultaneous raids at six locations, including Roy’s residence in North Kolkata and a farmhouse registered in his name at Daspur. Another team of officials has targeted the residence of a businessman on Ballygunge Circular Road in South Kolkata. This businessman is reported to have connections with Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, particularly concerning the supply of medical equipment to the hospital.
Recently, Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, accused Roy of diverting medical equipment meant for RG Kar Medical College to his own nursing home near his North Kolkata residence. Roy has denied these allegations, demanding that any accuser provide concrete proof.
The raids come ahead of a crucial Supreme Court hearing scheduled for Tuesday regarding the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor from RG Kar Medical College. This hearing is taking place amid ongoing protests by junior doctors, who recently met with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at her residence in South Kolkata.
Following the meeting, Chief Minister Banerjee announced her decision to remove several key officials, including the Kolkata Police Commissioner, the deputy commissioner of the North division, the director of health services, and the director of medical education, in response to demands from the protesting junior doctors. However, the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum (WBJDF) has stated that their cease-work agitation will continue until these changes are fully implemented.
