Income Tax Dept at BBC offices: Searches are carried out as part of a tax evasion probe
On Tuesday the Income Tax department conducted a survey operation at British Broadcasting Service (BBC)’s offices in Delhi and Mumbai. According to the sources, this was carried out as part of a tax evasion probe.
As part of a survey, the Income Tax Department only covers a company’s business premises and does not raid residences and other locations of its promoters or directors.
The sources also said that the team reached there to verify documents related to the company’s business operations and those related to its Indian arm.
According to reports, the employees of the broadcasting corporation were asked not to use their computer systems and phones, including their personal ones. I-T officers’ have also seized the phones of employees in the office.
Reports quoting sources said that the employees working the afternoon shift at the BBC’s Delhi office were asked to work from home, while those in the office were asked to leave early.
This comes amid a controversy over the BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier, the Supreme Court had declined to entertain a PIL filed by Hindu Sena seeking a ban on the BBC for airing the documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’ on the 2002 Gujarat riots.
