“India’s G20 Presidency was challenging due to very “sharp East-West polarization, deep North-South divide”: Jaishankar

Addressing the audience at the “India-UN for Global South: Delivering for Development” event in New York, External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar emphasized the significant hurdles faced by India during its G20 Presidency, citing “a very sharp East-West polarisation and a very deep North-South divide” as prominent issues.

S Jaishankar noted that the G20 Summit and Presidency had been particularly challenging due to the global division. However, he highlighted India’s determination to ensure that the organization’s core agenda was reinstated.

Jaishankar reiterated that the core agenda of India’s G20 Presidency was centered on global growth and development. He pointed out that India initiated its Presidency by convening the “Voice of the Global South Summit,” which brought together representatives from 125 nations in the southern hemisphere.

United Nations General Assembly President Dennis Francis lauded India’s G20 Presidency, describing it as a historic milestone. He commended India for ushering the African Union into the G20 as a permanent member, emphasizing the symbol of solidarity and cooperation across the Global South.

India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj, emphasized India’s deep-rooted commitment to the Global South during her address at the event.

Kamboj stated that India’s engagement with the Global South is not just a matter of policy but is woven into the very fabric of India’s culture and philosophy. She highlighted how the recent G20 New Delhi leaders’ declaration reaffirmed India’s dedication to the comprehensive development of fellow developing nations.

She asserted, “As far as India is concerned, our engagement with the Global South is not just a matter of policy, it is ingrained in the very fabric of our culture and philosophy.”
