K P Sharma Oli becomes Nepal’s Prime Minister for 3rd time

K P Sharma Oli was appointed Nepal’s Prime Minister for the third time on July 14 to lead the new coalition government. Oli (72) succeeds Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda who lost the vote of confidence in the House of Representatives on July 12. President Ram Chandra Paudel appointed Oli as the new Prime Minister of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML)-Nepali Congress (NC) coalition. Oli along with the new Cabinet will be sworn in on July 15.

After Prachanda lost the majority, Oli staked his claim to become the next Prime Minister with the backing of NC president Sher Bahadur Deuba and submitted the signatures of 165 House of Representatives (HoR) members — 77 from his party and 88 from the NC. The veteran politician served as Nepal’s Prime Minister from October 11, 2015, to August 3, 2016, and then, from February 5, 2018, to July 13, 2021.

K P Sharma Oli began his political career in 1966 in opposition to the partyless Panchayat system in place at the time. He joined the Communist Party of Nepal in February 1970. He was involved in subversive politics and was arrested for the first time in 1970. A year later he became a district committee member of the party and soon the chief of the Jhapa Movement Organizing Committee in 1972. Oli was imprisoned for 14 consecutive years from 1973 to 1987 for being against the autocratic Panchayat system. After his release from prison in 1987, he became a central committee member of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) and in-charge of the Lumbini zone until 1990.

After the 1990 People’s Movement, he was elected to the House of Representatives from Jhapa–6 in 1991. Oli was appointed chief of the CPN (UML) foreign relations department in 1992. He was re-elected to the parliament in 1994 and served as the Minister for Home Affairs in Manmohan Adhikari‘s minority government. Oli was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs as part of the interim government of Girija Prasad Koirala in 2006. Oli was elected as the chairman of CPN (UML) in July 2014 during the party’s ninth general convention.

  1. Let Nepal get rot on itself & India has nothing to worry. NO point in supporting Nepal. They are inching fast towards their own destruction & India should be happy for it.
Nepal will become slaves of China & it should be encouraged. Till then the value of self reliance will never be felt

  2. it seems only musical chair going in in KON. Being our important neighborhood. what is the solution for keeping our northern boarders safe?
