Ludhiana factory gas leak: 11 people died, several complained of breathing problems

Ludhiana gas leak tragedy: Eleven people were reported dead and several taken ill after a gas leak from a factory run from a thickly populated Giaspura locality in Punjab’s Ludhiana on Sunday, police said.

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have reached the spot, the entire area has been sealed, and locals have been asked to move to safer places.

The incident happened Sunday morning at Giaspura, a thickly populated area with several industrial and residential buildings, and a heavy migrant population. The source of gas leakage and the type of gas were still unclear.

The incident caused panic among the locals, some of whom even left their homes to save lives.

“Eleven people died and several complained of breathing problems following a leak,” a police official said.

Official sources said that the condition of nearly 10 people, who complained of breathing problems, is critical. Gas victims have been admitted to nearby hospitals.

The incident happened on Sua Road near Eastman Chowk in a block with different establishments, like a grocery shop, a Verka milk booth, and a clinic. According to officials, the source of the gas leak and the type of gas were still unclear. The fire brigade and NDRF teams were trying to ascertain the gas type.

Ludhiana police commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu said, “The NDRF experts are checking the type of gas. I cannot comment on it yet. It will be half-baked (the information). We have used drones to check if someone was lying unconscious on terraces or rooftops but no one else was found yet. All who became unconscious have been evacuated.”

Expressing grief over the incident, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in a tweet said, “The incident of gas leak of a factory in Giaspura area of Ludhiana is very sad. Police, government, and NDRF teams are present at the spot. All possible help is being provided. Details soon.”
