The rumblings inside the Grand Old Party are getting louder; first Jyotiraditya Scindia quit and now a significant section of the young brigade of the party is unhappy over Sonia’s insistence on having P Chidambaram (PC) in the team to guide the whenever-he-wants-to-become-President Rahul Gandhi.
The interim President Sonia Gandhi still entertains the former corrupt Finance Minister P Chidambaram so much that he has been put in the Congress special team to tackle COVID-19 and give suggestions and act as advisors to the President-in-waiting Rahul Gandhi. Today’s All India Congress Committee’s press release on the formation of the Consultative Group with veterans-who-belong-in-Margdarshak-Mandal Manmohan Singh, and “accused” Chidambaram has raised eyebrows in Congress circles, especially among the young leaders. This Group’s main activity is to guide (read teach) Rahul Gandhi on COVID-19 related issues.
“Sonia still wants Chidambaram to teach Rahul? What an irony! What will PC teach? How to make money during a pandemic? How to attack Govt with foul words? How not to support Govt during this period and gain public anger?,” ask many Congress leaders.
“Sonia is forgetting how much PC is hated across the country! And now she is deliberately teaming him with Rahul Gandhi, thus finishing Rahul Gandhi completely,” Congress leaders add.
Congress veterans say, Chidambaram’s proximity with Sonia Gandhi started from the Bofors scam days and he is Sonia family’s international-money-parking-methods advisor. BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had alleged many times that AE Services, the shell company which disbursed kickback money in Bofors Scam to Ottavio Quattrocchi and Sonia’s then brother-in-law Waltair Vinci was first promoted by Chidambaram’s controversial cousin A C Muthaiah. Sonia’s sister Nadia’s former husband Waltair Vinci was present in an official delegation trip which sealed Bofors deal and got maximum cut from the deal and later he buzzed off the family.
After the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power, Sonia tried her level best to save Chidambaram from corruption cases. First, she gave Rajya Sabha seat from Maharashtra over the protests of Congress leaders, gave a Lok Sabha seat to son Karti, who was already arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the INX Media bribery case and facing Income Tax cases for black money stashing in tax havens. Sonia even went to Tihar jail when Chidambaram was imprisoned in the INX Media bribery case and asked all Congress leaders to visit the jail to cheer up the accused.
Ignoring noted party lawyers Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Singhvi, Sonia entrusted Chidambaram to handle the Income Tax case concerning National Herald. These incidents show fondness of Sonia to Chidambaram. “Rahul Gandhi will only learn how to become arrogant from Chidambaram,” say many Congress leaders.
Many young Congress leaders aver that it is time to pack Chidambaram, Ahmed Patel, Manmohan Singh, A K Antony, Ghulam Nabi Azad, and Anand Sharma off to “Margdarshak Mandal” – a euphemism for put out to pasture. They accuse Sonia Gandhi of sidelining many young leaders like Sachin Pilot, citing the case of Jyotiraditya Scindia, who got frustrated and ultimately landed in the BJP.
“People hate old corrupt politicians and their cronies. Whenever the face of politicians like the Chidambarams comes on TV, the entire Congress gets abused. Sonia still wanted Rahul to be guided by these corrupt politicians who lack credibility. Looks like Congress has already conceded the 2024 elections. They have only Manmohan Singh and Chidambaram left to lead the party with an unwilling-and-shy Rahul Gandhi. God bless the GOP!” rue many Congress leaders.
