The family members of a victim in the horrific Palghar murder by mob lynching of two sadhus and their driver petitioned to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackrey for an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the probe. Petitioning to the Chief Minister on behalf of Nirmala Suresh Telgade and Pooja Nilesh Tegade, the mother and wife of driver Nilesh Telgade, Advocate Ishkaran Bhandari pointed out that as the role of Maharashtra Police is totally challengeable, the probe must be handed over to the CBI.

Driver Nilesh Telgade was brutally murdered by the unruly mob in Palghar along with two Sadhus Maharaj Kalpavruksha Giri ji and Maharaj Sushil Giriji on April 16. “That one of the most distressing visual in the videos of lynching is where the old Sadhu Shree Kalpavriksha Giri ji is coming out with a police officer, with a look of hope on his face that he is now safe, a hope which is sadly dashed in the most gruesome manner by the abject failure of Police to save him.

“That faith in impartiality and fairness of investigation is a sine quo non of administration of Justice. At the very least there is a huge conflict of interest in Police investigating a case where the conduct of its own officials is under the scanner,” pointed out Adv. Ishkaran Bhandari in the petition, citing several similar cases ordered by Supreme Court for the CBI probe. The detailed petition is published at the end of this report.

“In fact, the Supreme Court has, time and again, transferred the investigation from the State investigating agencies to CBI, where there were allegations on Police officers, in order to administer complete justice and to instill confidence in the minds of victims and the public,” said Advocate Ishkaran Bhandari, seeking Rs.One crore compensation from the State Government to each victim.

Virat Hindustan Sangam (VHS) leader Natraj Shetty met the mother and wife of Driver Nilesh Telgade and arranged help and legal assistance. BJP leader VHS President Subramanian Swamy also demanded that the Chief Minister should agree for a CBI probe.

VHS Maharashtra unit leaders Dr. Ajay Sankhe, Rajiv Harsora, and Palghar District VHS President Arvind Rai also met the victim driver’s family.  Prashant Kalgulkar and Sheetal Kargulkar of the Kargulkar Pratishthan on Wednesday met the mother and wife of Driver Nilesh Telgade and handed over Rs.51,000 as immediate help. They said they will adopt the driver’s young daughters Shalini and Sanika. The two young daughters were unaware of the plight of their father to date.

On Thursday, Sadhus of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) Margdarshak Mandal met Maharastra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari for impartial probe on this horrific incident. The Saints represented VHP are Mahamandeleshwar Swami Vishvesaranadaji Maharaj, Swami S Shankaranand Maharaj, and Swami Sukhdevanandji Maharaj. “The delegation of pujya Saints pointed out to the Governor that the particular belt in Palghar has been always a dangerous belt with the Left-leaning activists brainwashing innocent local people to take up arms with the propagation of Anti Hindu theories,” said Shriraj Nair, VHP Spokesperson of Mumbai.

  1. I just read an article where it is mentioned that 2 our of 3 of the victims belong to community of the tribals who lynched them. In the article it is mentioned that most of the tribals have got converted to Christianity as they get help from Christian missionaries but follow their own tribal customs. It is also mentioned that the tribal people in this region are involved in illegal liquor trade, stock pile liquor in forests and sell the liquor to individuals and wine shop owners. Some people interviewed said that the tribal people mistook the 3 victims as thieves who wanted to steal the hidden liquor. A huge mob gathered around the victims and the Kasa police and lynched them. The police could not do much as they have heavily outnumbered. Only a through investigations can bring out the truth. This pgurus article comes up with an all too familiar narrative. The logic of such narratives, as always, has been that if it has got something to do with tribal people, it must be the case of left leaning intellectuals on the pay rolls of China instigating them against Hinduism. Even if it is assumed that this narrative is true, the fact that tribal people suffer abject poverty and exploitation from other people and either take help from christian missionaries or take up arms is deliberately disregarded.

  2. First the conspiracy theory was “Muslims or Christians” were behind the lynching. Arnab Goswami smelled a rat like Alfred Hitchcock and indulged in heavy drama on Republic TV preparing a live script of insinuations to give birth to a new conspiracy theory in Bollywood style court room style in front of the nation as if the whole nation watches his TV and considers him to be an Oracle spewing truth to save Hinduism. Now the newest place holder conspiracy theory is that Left-leaning activists brainwashing innocent local people to take up arms with the propagation of Anti Hindu theories to lynch the Sadhus. The state police working under the directions of a saffron party that also strives to protect its core vote bank and till recently was an ally of ruling party now cannot be relied upon. The caged parrot CBI, infamous for midnight coups, now is a paragon of virtue, the god of honest investigations and justice. Many times I tried to believe that, though we came from a feudal culture, we have almost discarded this culture that is very much prevalent in Pakistan where police and courts can do what ruling parties want. If we have to move from this feudal culture we must allow constitutional institutions to work independently and that is not happening in 21st century modern India unfortunately.
