PM Modi to attend Indo-Pacific economic plan initiated by US President Biden in Tokyo

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has landed in Tokyo, Japan today for a 2-day visit where he will meet his QUAD counterparts. PM Modi’s most significant engagement on Monday will be his participation in the launch of US President Joe Biden’s ambitious Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) initiative that seeks the integration of Indo-Pacific economies and secure and resilient supply chains.

China refers to the area as the Asia-Pacific region and is averse to the Indo-Pacific strategic concept.

Foreign secretary Vinay Kwatra had said on Sunday that economic cooperation in the region is important for India and that PM Modi will focus on, among other things, efforts aimed at harnessing economic opportunities and capacity building.

On the bilateral with the US, while PM Modi said he will continue with Biden their dialogue on regional developments and contemporary global issues, the US NSA Jake Sullivan, who is accompanying Biden, said en route to Japan that talks with India on the Ukraine issue will be constructive and straightforward. Food security will also be an important subject of discussion at the QUAD meet.

Before PM Modi’s departure to Tokyo, he said in a statement, “The QUAD summit in Japan will provide an opportunity to the leaders to review the progress of their common initiatives and exchange views on the developments in the Indo-Pacific region and global issues of mutual interest.”

Prime Minister Modi will also participate in various other programs and interact with Japanese leaders and the Indian diaspora. PM Modi received a rousing welcome by the Indian Diaspora with “Modi Modi” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” slogans being reverberated.

“Landed in Tokyo. Will be taking part in various programmes during this visit including the Quad Summit, meeting fellow Quad leaders, interacting with Japanese business leaders and the vibrant Indian diaspora,” he tweeted.

“Japan’s Indian community has made pioneering contributions in different fields. They have also remained connected with their roots in India. I thank the Indian diaspora in Japan for the warm welcome,” PM Modi said in another tweet.

Apart from China’s military aggression, the Ukraine issue is again likely to dominate the agenda of meetings in Tokyo.
