Pakistan has deployed additional security forces across Mirpur as activists prepare for a major protest march following the Rawalakot firing incident
Tensions are escalating in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) after Pakistan deployed additional security personnel across key areas of Mirpur ahead of a major protest march planned by activists following the recent firing incident in Rawalakot.
The increased deployment comes amid growing public anger over the alleged use of force against demonstrators, with protest groups vowing to press ahead with what they have described as a “final march” despite heightened security measures.
According to local reports, authorities have reinforced security at major entry points, government buildings and sensitive locations in Mirpur in an apparent bid to prevent large-scale demonstrations. Checkpoints have also been strengthened, while movement in several areas is being closely monitored.
The fresh unrest follows the Rawalakot firing incident, which triggered widespread outrage among residents and political activists. Protest leaders have accused Pakistani authorities of suppressing dissent and using force to curb demonstrations demanding greater political rights and improved governance in the region.
Activist groups have called for a mass mobilisation, urging residents to join the proposed march despite warnings from the administration. They allege that Islamabad has failed to address longstanding grievances relating to governance, economic hardship and civil liberties in PoJK.
The developments underscore growing political tensions in the region, where anti-government protests have intensified in recent months over issues including inflation, electricity tariffs, unemployment and administrative policies.
While Pakistan has tightened security in anticipation of further demonstrations, protest organisers have maintained that the movement will continue until their demands are addressed.
Authorities have not officially commented on the scale of the security deployment, and the situation remains tense as security forces and demonstrators prepare for the planned protests.
