Rohit Vemula should have been a role model not a political football

[dropcap color=”#008040″ boxed=”yes” boxed_radius=”8px” class=”” id=””]I[/dropcap]t is asserted by his father that he is not a Dalit and Government officials say that his mother got the caste tag by wrongly representing her caste. It does not matter. More important is the question about the suicide of Rohit Vemula.

He has achieved significantly in his life by becoming a Research Scholar at the central university. He even dreamt of becoming a Carl Sagan according to reports.

Era of victimhood dominates that of achievers and role models.

He should have pursued his ambitions and got his doctorate. There is nothing on record to show that he was denied any facilities accorded to a doctoral student. He had the computer, he had a library and he had several teachers.

But he, instead of becoming a role model to hundreds of Dalit students who are younger to him, fell for the “victimhood trap”.

[dropcap color=”#008040″ boxed=”yes” boxed_radius=”8px” class=”” id=””]U[/dropcap]nfortunately he was from a dys-functional family. Naxal and other left student organisations eagerly wait for such a “student”, like vultures waiting for their prey. They instigate and increase the sense of Victimhood – They prevent students from pursuing studies and encourage them to do full time politics.

The standard operating procedure of extreme left organisations is to lure the vulnerable students. Of course many well to do and rich categories are lured by their western masters in Columbia and Yale and Oxford as in the case of many communist leaders/ thinkers.

But the local vulnerable segments spend hours and days in doing political activities egged on by “victimhood” and miss major golden opportunities to pursue their studies/ exams and assignments.

Vemula should not be glorified and provided as an example of an excellent student misled and damaged by his political groups.

[dropcap color=”#008040″ boxed=”yes” boxed_radius=”8px” class=”” id=””]N[/dropcap]ot only is suicide not an option for such a student,  it should never be showcased as a role model by Rahul Gandhi or Aravind Kejirwal. They should realize that it is a huge mistake to project him as a martyr or role model and make many other vulnerable students from dys-functional families to emulate or imitate them.

The proper method would be to squarely condemn the action of Vemula for committing suicide.

This author has taught hundreds of Dalit students over the years who have done very well in their professional careers even heading big divisions and corporates. They don’t cry victimhood but they are the role models and achievers.

Main Stream Media (MSM) does not find them, interview them or felicitate them. Rahul does not call them over for tea.

[dropcap color=”#008040″ boxed=”yes” boxed_radius=”8px” class=”” id=””]I[/dropcap]t is not news worthy to project a successful Dalit student from IITs or IIMs since it will not increase the guilt factor among these political vultures nor give them mileage for milking the misery of a mother or relatives.

More insidious and dangerous is a trend to encourage suicides and all these leaders can be accused as abetting suicides. It is not really fashionable to appreciate achievers but to demonize them and glorify victimhood.

We are in a peculiar world where victimhood is worshiped and those who overcome it and achieve it are not even recognized. Can we call it an era of false Gods being worshiped when their action deserve only derision or at most pity? Era of victimhood dominates that of achievers and role models.

  1. The Dalits in Hyderabad central university are co-opted into breaking India forces. On the first day of the academic year, one will see a notice in the hostel mess that ‘all SC/ST/OBC brothers are requested to gather at LHC (Lecture Hall Complex)’. When they gather, whether one was victim of caste discrimination or not before, the new-comers’ minds are agitated and the poison is slowly injected. This is not so much due to caste discrimination, but due to another sinister dimension at play, that is hitherto not discussed in the news. The evangelical activities are rampant in Univ. of Hyderabad among SC/STs. Over the time when they are in the campus (ranging from 2 – 6 years depending on the course), they are converted to christianity. With the proximity of Calvary Temple (near/around Miyapur, Hyd.) these activities seem to have increased. Sundays they conduct masses in the hostels (boys/girls), which have become another nuisance. Injecting poison and agitating these students from socially deprived backgrounds is then obvious – a double benefit for the ongoing evangelism (these rampant evangelical activities draw similarities to what are called ‘Campus Crusades’ that attempts to capture/reap people/souls from colleges/university campuses directly). Since some years they (ASA) have grown increasingly confrontational, on even small issues of no relevance, pushing for castist angle in every issue – eg. when mess secretary is questioned regarding excess mess bill compared to previous months and the secretary happened to be an SC/ST, when water tap is left open while shaving and asked to turn off, etc. It seems as if they are now practicing the so called ‘reverse racism(discrimination)’ as called in racist studies.

There is a sinister design/campaign going on in India and particularly in Andhra Pradesh+Telangana. This region could very well become next Tamilnadu in terms of co-opting the Dalits. The Brahmin bashing is a common place in UoH. Sometime back when the Chundur killings verdict came out, there were cartoons painted on campus roads depicting Brahmins celebrating the burnings, where in fact the killings were done by Reddy and Telaga communities, and belonged to Congress party local unit. In a way one can say, they could not confront these Kshatriya upper castes, but were abusing Brahmins as they were soft targets. The leftists’ presence need not be mentioned.

Rohit was killed by this venom which drove him away from his dream, who otherwise seems to have fought unyieldingly with his circumstances of life.

  2. From Viipuri to Vemula it is all about poly tricks of politics and victimhood peddling as a political tool to whip up passions is one of the oldest weapon of mass suppression.
However, we also need to address various socio-psychological, cultural and educational aspects of our society, I mean Indian society at large has to be addressed with proper perspective without any prejudice as the jaundice of presumptions and perversions prevail, in fact more subtly promoted by many labeled intellectuals.
This malady seems to be a global phenomenon with multiple forms of manifestations at different places with varying degrees of intensity, violence, aggression, cowardly display of emotional imbalances.
Very often the most vulnerable people are the adolescents who can be easily manipulated and those who have not matured/out grown their adolescent mind sets.
The political players usually assign labels like secular, communal etc and appropriate historically useful names and spice it with media sponsored slogans. This is a very strong intoxicating cocktail instigating idiotic activities.
They create isolated islands of ideologies, mostly negative and made to see the whole world as enemies and promote well furnished identity cages with appealing labels of victimhood.
So to recapitulate the web of issues involved are the building blocks for certain political and religious outfits to build their edifice.
These aspects/blocks have to be studied, understood and addressed rather than merely reacting to media headlines which will turn soon to Tamil Nadu and Punjap with newly sponsored spectacles as dictated by their political pay masters.
By now the script is obvious as some political outfits and vested interest groups are not comfortable with the idea of progressing India towards economic prosperity and are therefore resorting to all these.
However, it is the duty of educated, matured and sincere citizens to take a deeper look into the root causes of the diseases and try to address them in all earnestness.
