Why does the Left succeed?
Does it have to do with the genetics?
It may have to do more with the genetics than common sense. Though common sense also makes people believe that the rich sparing just a little will eliminate poverty. They do not bother to calculate, in fact, most may not even know how to calculate, exactly how much the rich will need to spare to eliminate the poverty. For example, Mukesh Ambani‘s salary (only his salary and dividend are real, rest all is just valuation of his shareholdings) won’t be enough even for just one slum in Mumbai.
Someone must have the money to share…
But if there is a government that can force him to share his salary with the slum dwellers, there won’t be any Mukesh Ambani in such a country. So beyond common sense, why exactly does the Left succeed?
When a child opens his eyes in the world, he takes it as a given. Genetic code makes us believe that the world just exists. This is imprinting that evolution has not erased. So, at any given time in our life, we assume that things will always be like this.
Sita Ram Yechury is just a minor irritant, and Kejriwal may be wrong, but he is sincere. Till one fine day, the factory goes boom, and the jobs disappear.
But the reality is exactly the opposite. The world may have just existed for the cave dwellers. But the world around us is “artificial.” It is a creation of man, and without continuous maintenance and renewal, it will disappear back to the cave dwellers’ world.
Four basic things…
For example, just the four most basic things we take for granted:
- Food on our table.
- Tap water.
- The sewerage system.
We cannot imagine our life without these. You may be surprised to see the food on the list, but even the food in the forms that we see in our homes today has an elaborate capitalist system behind it. And of course, the rest three, tap water, electricity, and sewerage system appeared with capitalism, and need solid capitalist economies to remain in place. Do you have any doubts? Ask Venezuelans or Zimbabweans about all the four. They will tell you how all the four disappeared within a decade.
So, the Left succeeds because the rich kids who lead it assume that their condominiums, their cars, the ready-to-eat meals, will always remain there. Taps won’t run ever dry, and a flick of the switch will always produce light, and there will always be a system to wash their waste away.
When it starts disappearing after they have taken control, they start blaming each other first, “you are not doing it right, that is not how Marx said it should be,” and then soon they start killing each other, “the bourgeoisie saboteurs” must be eliminated if the revolution has to succeed.
Onwards, to the next country…
Of course, it never succeeds, and they move to the next country, crying all the way, “It was never done right. That is why it failed.”
But the real tragedy is that those who did not believe in this infantile fantasy called socialism also suffer equally. Because they do not resist the thugs. They also after all believe that it will always be like this. Sita Ram Yechury is just a minor irritant, and Arvind Kejriwal may be wrong, but he is sincere. Till one fine day, the factory goes boom, and the jobs disappear.
Our normalcy bias is our undoing.
