“It’s Not Artificial”: Trump Signs Order Renaming AI to Super Intelligence
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday directing the federal government to replace the terms “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” with “Super Intelligence” and “SI” across all executive branch operations, arguing the new terminology better captures the pace and scale of the technology’s advance.
Trump made the announcement at a high-level White House luncheon attended by leading technology executives, including Tesla and SpaceX chief Elon Musk, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, among others. “We’re going to be signing a document today at 5 o’clock renaming Artificial Intelligence because it’s not artificial. We’re going to be renaming it Super Intelligence — officially renaming it,” Trump said.
What the order does
The order, titled “Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence,” requires federal departments and agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in official correspondence, public communications, websites, reports and administrative policy documents, and states that the executive branch will not acknowledge use of the terms “Artificial Intelligence” or “AI” in applicable official settings going forward. The order is also expected to establish a new federal statutory definition of “super intelligence” and propose corresponding changes to existing US laws. The US State Department has separately directed its international diplomats to adopt the new terminology in place of “artificial intelligence.”
“Bigger than the internet”
Trump framed the shift as reflecting an unprecedented moment for the country. “It’s much bigger than the Internet,” he said, describing the technology as “the biggest thing there is, maybe the biggest thing there’s ever been,” and adding, “This is unbelievable growth for our country — and we have all of them,” referring to the assembled tech leaders.
Safety framework and a self-policing pact
Alongside the renaming, industry leaders and administration officials briefed reporters on what they called the “White House Accord,” a voluntary framework focused on developing super intelligence safely and responsibly, built around four layers of safety measures. Trump characterised the arrangement as a commitment by the companies to police themselves as AI systems grow more advanced. “They’re going to police themselves,” he said, adding on the question of safety and misuse: “These models are very complex and again, I believe they’re going to be used for the good — and when they’re not, we’re going to be able to nab them.”
Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton, addressing the national security dimension of the discussion, said that maintaining American leadership in AI was “the most important thing for national security.”
