Sheikh Hasina faces new challenges as US cancels visa, UK denies asylum
In a significant development, the United States has revoked the visa of ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, according to insider sources close to the opposition in Bangladesh. This action follows escalating reports that Western nations, including the US, have been advocating for Hasina’s removal from power amid the ongoing political crisis in Bangladesh.
Hasina, who resigned and fled Bangladesh due to violent protests, is currently located at Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad, India.
As she seeks asylum in European countries, initial reports suggest that the United Kingdom is not prepared to offer her asylum. Meanwhile, Hasina’s sister, Rehana, who holds UK citizenship, is expected to travel to the UK shortly.
Protests in Bangladesh escalated into violent unrest, resulting in over 440 deaths in recent weeks. Hours after her resignation, Hasina’s residence was stormed by protesters, leading to widespread vandalism.
On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told Parliament that Hasina reached out to India for safe passage following her abrupt resignation.
Jaishankar briefed leaders of all political parties about the situation in the violence-struck nation and the steps taken by the Indian government.
