Joint US-UK airstrikes hit Yemeni airport; two strikes launched

The US-British naval coalition conducted two airstrikes on Hodeidah airport in the Yemeni Red Sea port city of Hodeidah, as reported by the media. The airport has been shut off since the Houthi group seized control of the city in 2014.

Al-Masirah TV did not elaborate further, but local residents described the explosions as significant. According to Xinhua news agency, the coalition has not responded to the allegation.

The Houthis initiated attacks, since November last year, with anti-ship ballistic missiles and drones, targeting vessels they claim are linked to Israel traveling through the Red Sea, in a show of support for Palestinians in Gaza.

In response, the US-British naval coalition deployed in the region has conducted airstrikes and missile attacks against Houthi positions since January to deter the group. However, this has only prompted an escalation in Houthi attacks to include US and British commercial and military ships.

Houthi leader Abdulmalik al-Houthi stated in a recent televised address that his group had targeted “a total of 166 ships associated with Israel, the US, and Britain.”
