Fresh military confrontation near Strait of Hormuz raises fears of wider regional conflict and disruption to global oil supplies
The United States has carried out what it described as “self-defence strikes” against Iranian military targets near the strategic Strait of Hormuz following the crash of a US Army Apache helicopter during a patrol mission near Oman. President Donald Trump blamed Iran for the incident, prompting a swift American military response.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), American fighter aircraft targeted Iranian air defence systems, surveillance radar installations and ground control facilities in southern Iran. Washington said the operation was intended to protect US personnel and safeguard international maritime traffic passing through one of the world’s most critical shipping routes.
US targets Iranian military infrastructure
CENTCOM stated that the strikes were carefully directed at military installations linked to Iran’s defensive network in the region.
The operation focused on sites near Jask, Sirik and Qeshm Island, areas that overlook the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly a fifth of global oil shipments pass.
US officials maintained that the strikes were defensive in nature and aimed at preventing further threats to American military assets and commercial shipping.
Iran launches drone retaliation
Iran strongly condemned the American action and quickly announced retaliatory measures.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it launched a drone attack targeting the US Fifth Fleet based in Bahrain. Iranian officials warned that additional military responses could follow if American operations continue.
Tehran also confirmed that several military and infrastructure sites in southern Iran suffered damage during the US strikes.
Gulf states issue security warnings
The rapidly escalating situation prompted security alerts across the Gulf region.
The General Staff of the Kuwaiti Army announced that air defence systems were actively intercepting what it described as “hostile aerial targets.” Authorities urged residents to remain calm and follow official safety instructions.
Meanwhile, Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior issued an emergency advisory after reports of Iranian drone activity near the kingdom.
“The siren has been sounded. Citizens and residents are urged to remain calm and head to the nearest safe place,” the ministry said in a statement.
Strait of Hormuz tensions spark global concerns
The latest confrontation comes at a particularly sensitive moment in the Middle East.
A fragile ceasefire between Iran and Israel has already come under strain following recent exchanges of fire, while efforts to revive broader diplomatic negotiations between Tehran and Washington remain stalled.
The renewed military activity around the Strait of Hormuz has also raised concerns about potential disruptions to global energy supplies and international trade, with analysts warning that any prolonged conflict could trigger fresh volatility in oil markets worldwide.
