A Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian city of Nizhnekamsk in Tatarstan has killed at least 12 people and injured 39 others, Russian officials said, in one of the deadliest such strikes inside Russia since the war began.

The attack targeted both industrial and residential areas of Nizhnekamsk, a city located around 1,000 km inside Russian territory. A major oil refinery in the city was also hit, with fires reported at the facility.

A later update from Reuters put the death toll at 13, including a child, while the number of injured remained at 39.

Oil refinery among targets

The attack struck the TANECO oil refinery, one of Russia’s major petroleum-processing facilities operated by Tatneft.

The refinery has previously been targeted by Ukrainian drones, including in June. The latest strike again raised concerns over the vulnerability of Russia’s energy infrastructure as Ukraine steps up long-range drone operations deep inside Russian territory.

Russia’s oil and fuel infrastructure has increasingly become a focus of Ukrainian attacks, with Kyiv seeking to disrupt facilities that contribute to Moscow’s war effort.

Residential areas also hit

According to Russian officials, the drone attack affected both industrial and civilian areas of Nizhnekamsk.

The casualties have made the strike particularly significant, as the attack resulted in one of the highest civilian death tolls from a Ukrainian strike inside Russia in recent months.

Russian authorities launched an investigation following the attack and described it as a terrorist attack. A period of mourning was also declared in Tatarstan following the casualties.

Ukraine intensifies deep strikes

The attack comes amid an intensification of Ukrainian drone operations against targets well beyond the immediate battlefront.

Kyiv has increasingly used long-range drones to strike Russian oil refineries, fuel facilities and other infrastructure, arguing that such attacks are aimed at weakening Russia’s ability to sustain its military campaign.

Ukrainian officials have indicated that putting pressure on Russia’s energy infrastructure is part of a broader strategy to raise the cost of the war for Moscow.

Russia and Ukraine trade fresh strikes

The Nizhnekamsk attack came amid another deadly cycle of Russian and Ukrainian strikes.

Russia has continued launching missiles and drones against Ukrainian cities, while Ukraine has expanded its attacks on targets inside Russia.

The latest escalation underlines how the conflict is increasingly extending beyond the front lines, with long-range drone warfare putting civilian areas and critical infrastructure at risk on both sides.

The latest casualties further highlight the growing human cost of the war as both Moscow and Kyiv intensify attacks deep inside each other’s territory.
