Claims made in Nambi Narayanan’s biopic are false, claims former ISRO scientists

A group of former ISRO scientists on Wednesday alleged that the claims made by ex-ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan in the movie ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect‘ and through some television channels, were false and amounts to defaming the space agency. Dr. A E Muthunayagam, Director, LPSE, ISRO; Prof E V S Namboothiri, project director, cryogenic engine and D Sasikumaran, the Deputy Director, cryogenic engine, and other former scientists from ISRO on Wednesday met the media here to “debunk” the claims made in the movie.

Interestingly, D Sasikumaran was the main accused in the controversial espionage case in ISRO along with Nambi Narayanan. Though discharged by the courts, Sasikumaran did not file any case against the false prosecution saying he could not afford further litigations. The ISRO scientists were speaking to the media at Thiruvananthapuram Press Club. Recently on many occasions, Sasikumaran was critical of the claims, and interviews were given by Nambi Narayanan in connection with the movie release. “So many things he falsely claimed,” said Sasikumaran.

Directed, produced, and written by actor R Madhavan, the biographical drama is based on the life of aerospace engineer Nambi Narayanan. Madhavan also plays the lead role in the movie. “We are forced to tell the public certain matter as Nambi Narayanan has been defaming ISRO and other scientists through the movie Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, and also through television channels. His claims that he is the father of many projects are false. He even claimed in the movie that he once corrected A P J Abdul Kalam, who went on to become the Indian President. That is also false,” the former scientists said.

They also said that they have asked the current chairman of ISRO S Somanath to take a decision on the false claims made in the movie. The scientists said that Narayanan’s claim in the movie that his arrest had led to a delay in India acquiring cryogenic technology was wrong. They said ISRO began to develop cryogenic technology in the 1980s and E V S Namboothiri was in-charge. “Narayanan was not having any connection with the project,” they claimed.

The group of former scientists also accused that at least 90 percent of matters mentioned in the movie in connection with ISRO are false. “We also came to know that Narayanan has claimed in some television channels that all that was said in the movie was true. Some scientists have even raised concern that Narayanan was taking credit for many of their achievements,” they said. There was no immediate reaction from Narayanan or the producers of the movie with regard to the former scientists’ allegations.

  1. Movie is just work of fiction although makers are claiming it as true story. Who do you believe a group of renowned scientists all saying the same thing or one guy glorifying himself.

  2. Well. Let it be false. What did they do, when Nambi was implicated and underwent fabricated case? Why did ISRO could not complete cryogenic technology during said period? Above all, what was Kalam’s role over this case during his presidency?

  3. The basic question, was he falsely implicated or not. It is possible that those who implicated him by involving a Maldivian lady, did not have clue as to depth of his involvement in the project, if what the ISRO people are saying is true.

  4. 90% false or 100% true would not matter as it is a movie based on the life story of an ISRO
scientist. Nothing wrong with the movie ep say but everything is wrong with the people in real life beyond the reel life. Why get worked up over a movie? Are there guilty minds among those now claiming falsity of the movie? It is for those who feel that 90% of the narrative is false then correct it with evidence. Otherwise, it’s a case of the ‘one who bites the chilly would feel the heat”!
