INS Agray, INS Sanshodhak and INS Dunagiri join the Indian Navy fleet as PM Modi underscores India’s growing defence manufacturing capabilities
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday commissioned three advanced indigenous naval platforms—INS Agray, INS Sanshodhak and INS Dunagiri—into the Indian Navy, marking a significant milestone in India’s maritime and defence modernisation efforts.
With their formal induction, the three vessels have become operational assets of the Navy’s combat fleet, strengthening India’s maritime security and operational preparedness. Addressing a gathering during the commissioning ceremony, the Prime Minister expressed pride in witnessing the induction of the domestically built platforms and congratulated the Indian Navy along with all stakeholders involved in their development.

Highlighting the role of India’s manufacturing ecosystem, Modi said nearly 200 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) contributed to the construction of the vessels, generating employment opportunities and supporting indigenous defence production.
The Prime Minister also referred to the government’s efforts to strengthen the maritime sector through investments in shipbuilding and port infrastructure. He said initiatives such as Sagarmala are helping modernise ports while enhancing India’s overall maritime capabilities.

Emphasising the government’s focus on self-reliance in defence, Modi noted that India had long remained one of the world’s largest defence importers. However, after 2014, a conscious policy shift was undertaken to boost domestic manufacturing and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.
He further stated that India’s defence exports have witnessed substantial growth, rising from around Rs 40,000 crore to Rs 1.80 lakh crore, reflecting the country’s expanding footprint in the global defence market.
The commissioning of INS Agray, INS Sanshodhak and INS Dunagiri is expected to provide a significant boost to the Indian Navy’s operational strength while reinforcing India’s vision of becoming a major defence manufacturing hub.
