Dominica to bestow its highest national honour to PM Modi

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to the Caribbean, the government of Dominica has announced that it will confer its highest national honor, the Dominica Award of Honour, on the Indian leader. The award recognizes Modi’s significant contributions to Dominica during the COVID-19 pandemic and his broader efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between India and the Caribbean nation.

A statement released by the government of Dominica on Wednesday revealed that the award will be presented by Dominican President Roosevelts Skerrit during the upcoming India-CARICOM Summit. The summit will provide a platform for further discussions on deepening ties between India and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic have been instrumental in supporting our nation and our region,” said the statement. In particular, the Dominican government highlighted India’s generous donation of 70,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to Dominica in February 2021. This timely gift played a key role in the country’s vaccination efforts and enabled Dominica to assist its neighboring Caribbean nations in their own pandemic response.

Dominica’s recognition of Prime Minister Modi’s leadership comes as he is set to embark on a historic visit to Guyana. This will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in over 50 years, marking a significant milestone in India-Caribbean relations.

In addition to his efforts during the pandemic, Dominica also commended Prime Minister Modi for India’s support in the fields of education, information technology, and climate resilience. Under Modi’s leadership, India has worked closely with the Caribbean nation to promote sustainable development and build resilience against climate change, which has become an urgent issue for island nations like Dominica.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit expressed gratitude for India’s partnership and highlighted the importance of the award. “Prime Minister Modi has been a true partner to Dominica, particularly during our time of need amid a global health crisis,” Skerrit said. “It is an honor to present him with Dominica’s highest national accolade as a symbol of our gratitude for his support and as a reflection of the strong ties between our countries. We look forward to building on this partnership and advancing our shared vision of progress and resilience.”

In response, Prime Minister Modi expressed his deep appreciation for the recognition and reiterated India’s commitment to working alongside Dominica and the wider Caribbean region to address global challenges. “Collaboration is key in tackling issues such as climate change and geopolitical conflicts. India remains dedicated to partnering with Dominica and the Caribbean to find solutions to these challenges,” Modi said in a statement.

The India-CARICOM Summit, where the award will be presented, will be a major forum for India and CARICOM member states to discuss shared priorities and explore new avenues for cooperation. As India continues to strengthen its ties with the Caribbean, this recognition of Prime Minister Modi underscores the growing relationship between the two regions, marked by mutual support and shared goals for the future.
