President Murmu insult row: BJP writes to NCW demanding stern action; slams TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee over her leader’s comment

The BJP has condemned the statement from the Bengal minister and called Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party 'anti-tribal'

Mamata’s Minister Akhil Giri is under fire over comments on President Droupadi Murmu

After Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Akhil Giri made the most depraved remarks on President of India Droupadi Murmu, BJP MP Saumitra Khan has written a letter to the National Commission for Women (NCW) and requested them to take cognizance of the situation by arresting and taking stern action against him.

The BJP slammed TMC and CM Mamata Banerjee for the hateful remark made against the President of India in the presence of other senior party leaders including the Women and Child Development minister, Dr. Shashi Panja.

Amid the insult row. In the letter, the saffron party leader stated that this heinous act by Akhil Giri should not be forgiven in any situation as the insult of President Murmu is an insult to women’s empowerment, the Indian Democratic system, and an insult to the entire 140 crores people of the country.

While Akhil Giri was addressing a rally and while making a verbal attack on BJP leader and Bengal LoP Suvendu Adhikari, he dragged President Murmu’s name and uncouthly and offhandedly insulted her. “He (Suvendu) says, I am not good-looking. How beautiful you are! Good looking… We don’t judge looks. We respect the chair of your President. How does your President look?” Akhil Giri outrageously said.

BJP IT-Cell head Amit Malviya said, “This is the most sexist and misogynist comment coming from a TMC minister in the presence of another woman minister Sashi Panja and he went on to berate the President on how she looks. Remember, Mamata Banerjee has always been anti-tribal and she did not support Droupadi Murmu for the President’s office, and now this. It is the lowest level of discourse in Mamata’s Governance”.

Meanwhile, the TMC has distanced itself from Giri’s remarks. The party’s spokesperson Dr. Shashi Panja, the Minister of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare in the Mamata government, said, “This comment is not endorsed by the party. We don’t endorse such comments. It is for the minister to take responsibility. We hold the highest regard for the President of India.”

Akhil Giri has released a statement in which he said that it happened due to a slip of tongue. “I respect the highest office of our country, the constitutional head of our nation. For the past few days Suvendu Adhikari, LoP of the West Bengal Assembly and BJP leader is passing one after the derogatory remarks against me… Out of that anger, I have said a few things naming our President. It was a slip of tongue and out of anger. I repent for that comment, I made on our President,” Akhil Giri said.
