MHA Security Advisory Over West Asia Crisis
The Centre has issued a nationwide security advisory to states amid escalating tensions in West Asia following the killing of Ali Khamenei, with officials warning that international developments could have implications for India’s internal security.
Sources said the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has asked all states and Union Territories to remain on high alert and closely monitor the activities of both pro-Iran and anti-Iran groups. The directive comes in the wake of protests by sections of the Shia community across parts of the country after Khamenei was reportedly killed on February 28.
According to officials, intelligence inputs suggest that global geopolitical tensions, particularly involving Iran, Israel and the United States, could trigger sporadic protests or attempts to disturb communal harmony within India. The advisory underscores the need for enhanced vigilance, preventive action and coordinated intelligence sharing.
Focus on embassies and key installations
The MHA has instructed states to strengthen security around diplomatic missions, including the Iranian, American and Israeli embassies and consulates. Sensitive locations such as major tourist destinations, Jewish institutions and establishments linked to Western nations have also been placed under heightened watch.
Security agencies have been asked to increase deployment at vulnerable sites and ensure that rapid response teams remain prepared to handle any untoward incident. Local police forces have been directed to intensify patrolling in crowded areas, transport hubs and other high-footfall locations.
Officials said particular attention should be paid to detecting potential threats such as Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), with bomb detection and disposal squads placed on standby where necessary.
Monitoring radical elements and terror threats
The advisory also flags concerns about possible exploitation of the situation by extremist groups. Intelligence agencies have warned that terrorist organisations such as Islamic State and Al-Qaeda could attempt to use the prevailing tensions to incite unrest or carry out disruptive activities.
In addition, authorities have been asked to keep a close watch on radical preachers and individuals who may attempt to mobilise crowds or spread inflammatory rhetoric in response to developments in West Asia.
While there is no specific threat input at present, officials stressed that preventive vigilance is essential given the volatile international situation.
Social media surveillance intensified
Recognising the role of digital platforms in shaping public sentiment, the MHA has directed cyber cells across states to closely monitor social media platforms to curb the spread of misinformation, provocative content and rumours that could inflame communal tensions.
Directors General of Police (DGPs) have been instructed to ensure swift action against content that could disturb public order. Law enforcement agencies have also been told to coordinate with central intelligence agencies for real-time information sharing.
Internal security preparedness
The Centre’s advisory highlights concerns that international flashpoints can have ripple effects within India, particularly in sensitive or communally diverse areas. Officials emphasised that maintaining law and order remains a top priority and that all preventive measures must be taken to ensure public safety.
States have been advised to conduct regular reviews of security arrangements, particularly in districts with a history of communal sensitivity. Police units have also been asked to engage with community leaders to maintain calm and prevent misinformation from spreading.
As the Iran–Israel conflict continues to evolve, authorities remain watchful of its potential domestic impact. Security officials reiterated that while India is not directly involved in the conflict, the government is taking proactive steps to ensure that external developments do not disrupt internal stability.
