Tech billionaire breaks from Trump, declares war on ‘one-party system’ and federal spending
Elon Musk, once a close political ally and top donor to US President Donald Trump, announced the formation of a new political party—the “America Party“—on Saturday, aiming to challenge what he called the “one-party system” in the United States.
The world’s richest man and CEO of SpaceX and Tesla took to X, the social platform he owns, to unveil his new political initiative, declaring it a direct response to what he perceives as rampant government waste and unchecked federal spending.
“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk wrote. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
Bitter fallout with Trump over federal spending
Musk’s dramatic political pivot follows a falling out with Trump over the president’s flagship “One Big Beautiful Bill” — a domestic spending package projected to add $3.4 trillion to the national deficit over a decade. Musk, who previously led Trump’s now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), denounced the legislation as “debt slavery.”
He vowed to hold accountable the lawmakers who supported it, including members of the Republican Party, by opposing them in upcoming elections.
“They will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth,” Musk said earlier in the week.
In retaliation, Trump suggested he might consider deporting Musk and stripping federal funding from his companies, despite Musk’s US citizenship since 2002.
Public poll and strategic campaign plans
Musk cited a public poll he posted on July 4, which asked users if they supported independence from the entrenched two-party system. The poll attracted over 1.2 million responses, with a 2-to-1 margin favoring the formation of a new political party.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party, and you shall have it!” Musk declared.
He also shared a meme featuring a two-headed snake labeled “End the Uniparty,” underscoring his view that both major parties serve the same entrenched interests.
Musk later outlined a political strategy targeting “2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts” to swing legislative influence, aiming to make the America Party a decisive player in Congress.
Third-party concerns resurface
Political observers have noted the historical risks of third-party movements, drawing comparisons to Ross Perot’s 1992 presidential campaign, which many believe split the conservative vote and helped elect Democrat Bill Clinton.
“You are pulling a Ross Perot, and I don’t like it,” one user posted on X.
With all 435 House seats and a third of the Senate up for election every two years, the America Party’s potential influence remains uncertain. However, Musk’s entrance into the political arena has already disrupted traditional party dynamics and promises to reshape the 2026 midterms—and possibly the 2028 presidential race.
