India and Australia strengthened their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership as PM Modi met Australian PM Albanese in Melbourne
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held bilateral talks with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese in Melbourne, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to deepen the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Trade, defence, critical technologies, clean energy and critical minerals figured prominently in the discussions.
The meeting took place during the second leg of PM Modi’s three-nation tour and ahead of the Australia–India Annual Leaders’ Summit, underscoring the growing strategic and economic partnership between the two Indo-Pacific nations.
Trade and investment top agenda
The two Prime Ministers reviewed progress in bilateral trade and explored ways to accelerate negotiations on a broader trade agreement. They also discussed expanding investment flows, strengthening supply chains and enhancing cooperation in emerging sectors.
PM Modi highlighted India’s rapid economic growth and invited Australian businesses to increase investments in infrastructure, manufacturing and innovation.
Defence, critical technologies and clean energy
Defence cooperation, maritime security and critical technologies formed a key part of the discussions as both countries seek closer strategic coordination in the Indo-Pacific.
The leaders also explored opportunities for collaboration in clean energy, green hydrogen, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, semiconductors and nuclear energy. Australia, which possesses significant reserves of critical minerals and uranium, is expected to play a key role in supporting India’s long-term energy transition.
Strengthening strategic partnership
During the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and strengthening people-to-people ties.
The discussions also focused on enhancing collaboration in education, technology, innovation and regional security while promoting a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
Business and diaspora engagements
Besides the bilateral meeting, PM Modi participated in business engagements in Melbourne, interacting with leading industry representatives from both countries to promote greater economic cooperation.
He is also scheduled to address members of the Indian diaspora during his visit before proceeding to New Zealand, the final stop of his three-nation tour.
