Army coup in Bangladesh sends PM Hasina into exile

Sheikh Hasina has resigned as Bangladesh’s Prime Minister and the army has taken control amid violent protests in the country. Hasina, who started her fifth term as Prime Minister earlier this year, left the state capital Dhaka in a military helicopter and may be headed to a safer location in India.

Protesters demanding Hasina’s resignation stormed Gono Bhaban, the Prime Minister’s official residence, local media reports have said.

Bangladesh Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman told the media that the Army will form an interim government and has appealed to the protesters to return to the path of peace.

“There is a crisis in the country. I have met Opposition leaders and we have decided to form an interim government to run this country. I take all responsibility and promise to protect your life and property. Your demands will be fulfilled. Please support us and stop the violence. If you work with us, we can move towards a proper solution. We cannot achieve anything through violence,” he said.

Protestors also vandalized a statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Ms Hasina’s father and the tallest leader in the country’s history who led its fight for Independence from Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s army chief Waker-Uz-Zaman appealed to protestors, “End violence, will meet your demands. We will form an interim government.”

“The country has suffered a lot, the economy has been hit, many people have been killed — it is time to stop the violence,” he added.

At least 98 people were killed and hundreds injured in Bangladesh on Sunday as police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse tens of thousands demanding the resignation of PM Hasina.

The violence marked one of the deadliest days in Bangladesh’s recent history of civil unrest, surpassing the 67 deaths reported on July 19 when students protested against the quota system for government jobs.

  1. Think it is the only country where people who fought for its liberation were assassinated & whole families are wiped off i.e. founding fathers / mothers, were all killed / murdered / assassinated.
Interestingly India which supported its liberation did nothing to enlarge the chicken area & voluntarily gave more land to Bangladesh….what a self sacrifice by India by its stupid leaders i.e. Indira Gandhi who worried about her official power than country.
