RJD workers marching towards Raj Bhavan were stopped by police, with water cannons used to disperse the protesters
RJD leader and Bihar Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav was detained on Wednesday during a protest march towards Raj Bhavan in Patna over the alleged use of an AK-47 during a student protest in Siwan last month.
The march began at JP Golambar, with RJD MPs, MLAs and workers joining Tejashwi Yadav. Police stopped the protesters as they moved towards Raj Bhavan and used water cannons to disperse the crowd. RJD MP Misa Bharti also participated in the march and was detained.
The protest followed a July 25 incident in Siwan in which a police constable was seen in a video allegedly firing an AK-47 during a student demonstration linked to an NEET paper-leak protest. The constable was subsequently suspended, while an inquiry was ordered. Police had said no one was injured and that personnel had been instructed not to open fire during the protest.
Tejashwi said the RJD would continue its agitation until the students received justice. He also accused the government of using force to stop the march and alleged that the water-cannon action was carried out on the instructions of Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.
“We will keep the fight on. We are not afraid of the jail,” Tejashwi said, while also raising issues of unemployment, paper leaks and transparency in examinations.
During the demonstration, a protester was seen carrying a dummy AK-47, while some RJD supporters climbed onto the roof of the police vehicle after Tejashwi was detained.
RJD MP Manoj Jha said students and young people were angry over repeated paper leaks and unemployment, arguing that they wanted concrete solutions rather than political assurances.
